With such a huge surge of new denim jeans’ styles this year, I know that many of us are finding it difficult to plan our fall wardrobe. Leisurewear has been pretty dominant this year, and not everyone wants to stop wearing their classic skinny jeans and start wearing wide legs! So here are some of the best fall trends for denim, so you get a better idea of what is most fashionable and flattering – and the styles you should be letting go!
In general, denim is still hugely popular and as we face the end of working from home, smart denim may well become a bridging garment between jogging/sweatpants/athleisure and traditional office-wear. So there’s definitely a space to wear modern denim as a daytime fabric, as well as a trendy new look for casual nights out and weekends. The darker blues and neutral colors, plus unusual, new shapes are exciting trends you shouldn’t ignore this fall/winter season!
What jeans are trendy for fall this season?
1. Indigo, Wider-leg & Higher-Waist Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
We’re not going to throw out all our classic skinny jeans just yet, but high-rise skinnies are definitely taking over for all jeans styles. And although lighter shades won’t be going away, indigo and darker blue colors will be a hot choice for autumn this year. And wider straight-leg jeans seem to have won the battle against bell-bottoms and flares.
2. 90’s Skater-Inspired Jeans that Flatter – Fall Jeans’ Trends
The skater-inspired jeans trend remind us of the 90’s, and is a very flattering wider-leg style. This is going to be one of the most popular styles, as it combines a looser-fit and wider leg, without being so wide as to spoil your body proportions. The image below shows a style that suits most body types. Remember, you need to be fairly tall to pull off the look of the widest legs.
Look out for extra details, like a ring on the fly zipper and a mid to high waist that has an overlapping flap with two buttons etc. This is how you show your individual style whilst wearing blue-jeans. And you can wear them with sexy tops or warmer, outsize T-shirts tucked in at one side.
Top Tip: And skater jeans include the trendy, outrageously ripped look, which you can wear in autumn with fish-net or brightly-colored, thick tights underneath for a fun, new twist. You can pull a sweater and jeans look together beautifully by matching, or contrasting, bright tights with your top under ripped jeans!
3. Straight-Leg Medium-Rise Mom Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
This style has taken off like a rocket this summer and is set to be a fashion favorite through Fall/Winter. It’s a very forgiving jeans style that’s trendy and comfortable to wear with comfy flat shoes or boots for autumn. It’s not edgy or extreme and that’s what makes it so easy to wear for different occasions.
4. Cropped Boot-Cut Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
Cropped, boot-cut jeans are also ‘in’ for fall! They give you an edgy, high-fashion look and are perfect for wearing with boots. And this season’s styles are well-fitted, without being tight, around the hips, waist and thighs to give a flattering body-shape. For the trendiest autumn cropped, boot-cut jeans look out for higher hems you can wear to show off the latest, studded bootees!
5. Creamy Natural-Colored Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
I always feel chic when I wear my cream, straight jeans. They are made of denim, but have a classier look than light-wash, casual jeans. And they look fabulous teamed up with the coming season’s neutral black/brown top and the gorgeous jewel colors. You’ll look as hot as a log-fire on cool, fall days! And as not everyone has cold weather in autumn and winter, sandy-brown and all shades of cream jeans are perfect for all climates!
6. Boho Patchwork Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
Don’t think that this is the same old patchwork people wore in 2001; it’s completely fresh and different this time around. The different fabrics are more likely to be set in vertical sections and may have half-and-half colors with each leg being a different color! With ragged hems, this is more of a vintage look and has the potential to make lots of really interesting Boho outfits!
7. Cargo Jeans – Fall Jeans’ Trends
As one of this season’s major trends is the 90’s, cargo jeans are back in the stores. But not the grungy type, this time around the look, colors and fit are far more chic. This means you can wear them for going out, with a cute top and one of the new, fall handbag designs! Colors range from blue-washes to creamy and neutral colors, so you’ll be able to match them with lots of your favorite autumn tops, sweaters and jackets!
Which Denim Trends Are ‘Out’ for Fall/Winter?
It’s time to say, ‘bye, ‘bye to brightly colored denim outfits, especially matching jackets and trousers. I must admit, I’ve never bought any hot pink, red or rainbow colored denim, during a long career of wearing denim. The fact is, colored denim never stays in fashion for very long and charity shops are its natural resting place. It may have been lots of fun for summer wear, but blue, cream, black and light-brown are the neutral colors that will last and be everywhere this fall and winter!
And if you’ve enjoyed wearing long, flared denim skirts this summer, I’m afraid they’ve got to go as well. They are fabulous for creating cooling draughts in hot weather and with a crisp, tucked in blouse make a nice change from jeans sometimes. But they’re not going to be the best denim to wear in the office, as they will look overpowering with high boots and a sweater on top.
Go for Indigo or Cream/Sand for the Smartest Jeans Looks
You’ll have a better silhouette and better acceptance of denim for office-wear if you go for a flattering but loose shape and a smart, indigo shade. Skinny jeans may not be suitable for wearing to the office, but straight leg styles are less casual and can look elegant with a smart sweater or tucked in blouse and belt.
Of course, for those who have warm weather throughout autumn and winter, the cream and sandy shades of denim will look great for work, too. Worn with the gorgeous and fashionable, gem colors of autumn/winter this year, you’ll look like you’ve created a proper ‘outfit’ and not just thrown on your old jeans!
So now you know what’s what, you can start planning your lovely new autumn/winter looks and enjoy the latest jeans’ trends! And I’ll be posting advice for the best jeans’ styles to wear for short and tall women soon!
